Jules Destrée and Justice
Jules
Destrée's lawyer career knows two strong moments, that
bring in evidence an undeniable faith in justice and a mastership
of oratory art.
The great trials :
- 1886 : " The Falleur-Schmidt
Trial ". Trial for union liberty. Two responsibles
for the union " Union verrière ", Falleur
and Schmidt, are accused, erroneously, to be the instigators
of plundering and set on fire of the Glassfactory and the
castle Baudoux in Jumet during the workingmen's riots troubling
the area of Charleroi. First great trial, first failure, first
disillusion against miscarriage of justice.
- 1889 : " Le grand Complot ", trial of political
liberty, of the right to strike. 87 people, members of the
Socialist Republican Party of Alfred
Defuisseaux " accused of having decided the general
strike and having demanded the universal suffrage. An attempt
to overthrow. First victory and general acquittal.
- - 1923 : The " Communist
Plot " Trial for the liberty of expression and the
antimilitarism. Jules Destrée is defending Léon
Lesoil, ex-miner and secretary of the Communist Federation
of Charleroi. Other great victory and acquittal.
The Workmen's right :
- 1924 : " The Labour Legislation " written by Jules
Destrée and Max
Hallet. "The Labour Legislation ", shows a willpower
to modernize the penal code (Napoleon code) going together
with technological progress due to the industrial revolution.
