Important stages in the history of glass : the origins
Everything started in the Bronze Age when the first peoples
started to settle and to create luxury and comfort items:
and for this they worked with stone, ceramics and metal. At
the dawn of the fifth millennium, by sheer chance, they discovered
that certain mineral compositions turned into glass when subjected
to the fire, and they started using these shiny and impermeable
glazes as covers for stone or for pottery.
And so soon after the middle of the third millennium the
first objects made completely of glass started to appear in
a region which was culturally already well advanced; Mesopotamia
(Iraq and Northern Syria). Very few
objects have come into our possession from the time before
the real revolution in this art form in the 15th century BC,
which coincided with the appearance of the first
vessels , made using rudimentary moulding techniques.
Polychrome was the result of reconstituting glass mosaic.
