The World of Islam

From the 8th century onwards, the Islamic civilisation, thanks to a pacific climate, was also to show signs of a prolific production using a variety of techniques that incurred no reason for envying Greek and Roman glass.

After the turn of the 12th century, glassmaking was in full bloom, with the great centres of Aleppo, Damascus and Fostat (ancient Cairo) ; Islam's glassmaking art, which favoured enamelling and gilding, was to find its way into Europe in the booty from the crusades.
